10 Signs Your Car Is About to Break Down

29 May 2026

Most breakdowns don't happen without warning. Knowing these early signs could save you from a roadside emergency.

The majority of breakdowns give you advance warning before they happen. Most drivers miss these signs because they don't know what to look for. Here are ten common indicators that your car is heading toward a breakdown.

One: the battery warning light comes on. This yellow or red battery symbol on your dashboard means your car's charging system has a fault. It might be the alternator, the battery itself, or a loose connection. Don't ignore it.

Two: the engine overheats. A temperature gauge creeping into the red or a coolant warning light means your engine is running too hot. Pull over immediately if this happens — continuing to drive an overheating engine causes irreversible damage within minutes.

Three: you hear a knocking from the engine. A deep knocking sound, especially when accelerating, suggests bearing failure. This is an expensive repair and one that gets worse rapidly if ignored.

Four: brakes feel spongy or unresponsive. If the brake pedal goes closer to the floor than normal before braking effect, this is a safety-critical fault. Do not delay having it checked.

Five: the car pulls to one side under braking. This can indicate a stuck caliper or uneven brake wear — both requiring immediate attention.

Six: you can smell burning or oil. Burning smells can indicate oil on the exhaust, coolant leak, or overheating components. Any burning smell from a car should be investigated promptly.

Seven: white, blue, or black smoke from the exhaust. Blue smoke means burning oil. White smoke can mean burning coolant. Black smoke is often a fuel system issue. None of these is normal.

Eight: the oil pressure warning light illuminates. If this red light comes on while driving, stop the car as soon as safely possible. Oil pressure failure can destroy an engine within seconds.

Nine: the car is hard to start. Slow cranking or multiple attempts to fire suggests a battery or starter motor fault that will worsen.

Ten: you notice unusual vibrations. Vibrations through the steering wheel or bodywork can indicate wheel balancing issues, worn tyres, or suspension problems.

If you experience any of these signs, get your car looked at before your next long journey. SRL Recovery is available 24/7 on 07776 356 556 if the worst happens.
