Accident Recovery vs Breakdown Recovery: Key Differences
Accident recovery and breakdown recovery are handled differently. Understanding which you need could save you time and money.
Many people use the terms interchangeably, but accident recovery and breakdown recovery are two different things with different processes, costs, and insurance implications.
Breakdown recovery is what most drivers think of: your car has stopped working due to a mechanical fault, electrical failure, flat tyre, or similar. You call a recovery company, they come out, fix it or tow it, and you pay for the service. It's straightforward and typically covered by breakdown policies.
Accident recovery is more complex. If your vehicle has been in a road traffic accident, the situation often involves more damaged components, non-standard recovery angles (a car in a ditch, a van on its side), and potential involvement from Police Scotland or the Roads Policing Unit. There may also be insurance third-party considerations.
At SRL Recovery, we handle both. For accident recovery, we work closely with insurance companies and can often recover a vehicle without any upfront cost to the driver if the claim is against a third party's insurance. We're experienced in loading damaged vehicles safely — cars with damaged suspension, broken steering, or deployed airbags require specific loading techniques.
If your vehicle is undriveable after an accident, do not attempt to drive it. Damaged brake lines, bent steering components, or misaligned wheels can make an already serious situation worse. Call us on 07776 356 556 and we'll assess and recover safely.
One important note: if there are injuries at an accident scene, call 999 first. Recovery comes once emergency services have attended and declared the scene safe.
SRL Recovery covers the full Glasgow and Central Scotland area for both accident and breakdown recovery.
