How to Recover a Classic Car Safely

29 May 2026

Classic and vintage cars need specialist recovery knowledge. The wrong approach can cause damage that costs far more than the recovery itself.

Classic cars are a passion, an investment, and a source of pride for their owners. When a classic car breaks down, recovering it safely is essential — the wrong approach can cause bodywork damage, paint damage, or mechanical harm that costs far more to repair than the recovery job itself.

The fundamental rule for classic car recovery is: flatbed or nothing. Classic cars from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s were designed before modern towing standards. They often lack suitable tow points, have fragile front bumpers, and their suspension geometry was not designed to handle a partial-lift tow. A flatbed transports the vehicle level, with all four wheels on a solid platform. No stress, no strain.

Aluminium loading ramps rather than steel ramps are essential for classics with very low ride heights or fragile undercarriage components. Ground clearance on many classics is minimal, and the wrong ramp angle will catch the exhaust or front apron.

Many classic cars also have non-standard brake systems — cable brakes, drum brakes, or simply older hydraulic systems that behave differently when the engine is off. Our drivers test and account for this before attempting to load or manoeuvre.

Paint protection matters. We use soft straps and blankets to prevent any metal-to-metal contact during loading and transport. Hard hooks near bodywork are unacceptable for a vehicle that may have had a £10,000 paint restoration.
