Flood-Damaged Vehicle Recovery: What to Do When Water Strikes

29 May 2026

Flooding is an increasing risk across Central Scotland. If your vehicle is caught in floodwater, these steps could save it.

Flooding events have become more frequent in Scotland in recent years, and the Clyde valley — including areas around Glasgow, Rutherglen, and Hamilton — has been particularly affected. Knowing what to do if your vehicle encounters floodwater could be the difference between a manageable insurance claim and a written-off car.

If you encounter floodwater on a road, do not attempt to drive through standing water of unknown depth. The general rule is: if you can't see the road surface, don't drive on it. A standard car will float in as little as 30cm of moving water, and floodwater regularly conceals road collapses, debris, and manhole covers without lids.

If your engine stops in floodwater, do not attempt to restart it. Water in the engine — even a small amount — can destroy connecting rods and pistons when the engine attempts to compress liquid (which doesn't compress). This is called hydrolocking, and it causes terminal engine damage. The repair bill can exceed the vehicle's value.

Move yourself to safety first. Floodwater can rise rapidly and vehicles can be swept away. If water is rising, exit the vehicle immediately and move to higher ground.

Once you and your passengers are safe, call SRL Recovery on 07776 356 556. We carry winch equipment for extracting vehicles from flood zones and have experience loading flood-damaged vehicles onto flatbeds without attempting to start them. We'll transport directly to a specialist workshop that can assess the full extent of the water damage.

When dealing with your insurer, document everything. Photographs of the flood depth, the vehicle position, and any visible interior water ingress are essential for your claim.
