How Car Recovery Works: A Complete Guide
Never needed recovery before? Here's exactly what happens from the moment you call to the moment your car is safe — no jargon.
Many drivers have never needed a recovery vehicle and aren't quite sure what to expect when they call. This guide walks you through exactly what happens.
When you call SRL Recovery, our first priority is your safety. We'll ask for your location — be as specific as possible. If you're on a motorway, look for orange marker posts which give a kilometre reference. On a regular road, give us a street name, junction name, or landmark. We'll confirm your vehicle make and model and give you an estimated arrival time.
Once our driver arrives, they'll assess the situation. If the vehicle can be made roadworthy at the roadside — for example with a tyre change, a jump-start, or a fuel delivery — they'll do that first. Roadside fixes are quicker and cheaper than a full tow.
If the car can't be fixed on the spot, it's loaded onto the recovery truck. Most of our vehicles are flatbeds or low-loaders, which means your car is loaded onto a platform rather than towed from the front or rear. This is far safer for modern vehicles with complex suspension and drivetrain systems, and essential for all-wheel-drive and prestige cars.
You'll ride in the cab of the recovery truck with our driver. We'll take your vehicle to a destination of your choosing — your home, your preferred garage, or a dealership. If you haven't decided, we can take it to a safe compound and give you time to arrange things.
Payment is taken on the day. SRL Recovery provides clear pricing over the phone before we arrive, so there are no surprise charges when we get to you.
The whole process from breakdown call to drop-off is typically completed within 1–3 hours depending on location and distance.
