How to Choose a Recovery Company in Glasgow: Eight Questions to Ask

When you need recovery you are in a weak negotiating position and you know it. You are stuck, you want it over with, and the temptation is to take the first number that answers.

That is fine if the first number is good. Here is how to tell in about ninety seconds of conversation.

One: are you the operator or a broker

The single most useful question.

A lot of the results you find when searching are brokers or lead generation sites. They take your details, sell the job on, and the truck that arrives belongs to a firm you have never spoken to, at a price that includes the broker's cut.

Nothing about that is illegal, but it costs more, it adds a layer between you and the person actually coming, and if something goes wrong the two companies point at each other.

Ask directly: is the truck coming yours, and is the driver your employee. A straight operator answers in one word.

Two: where is the nearest driver right now

Not what is your average response time. Where is the truck.

Any operator with a working dispatch can answer that immediately. It also tells you whether the estimate you are about to be given is real or a stock figure, and it makes it much harder for someone to promise twenty minutes from twenty five miles away.

Across Glasgow, a genuine answer sounds like thirty to forty five minutes, shorter around the Lanarkshire corridor, longer for rural work. Anyone quoting the same short figure for everywhere is not looking at a map.

Three: what is the total, including everything

Ask for the number you will pay, not the rate.

Then ask specifically whether it includes the call out, the mileage, waiting time, any out of hours or holiday surcharge, and any access or difficulty charge. Those are the five places a quote grows between the phone call and the invoice.

Four: what equipment are you sending

This matters more than most people realise and it is the question almost nobody asks.

If your car is all wheel drive, automatic, electric, lowered, on air suspension, prestige or classic, ask whether it is coming on a flatbed. Dragging a car with driven wheels on the road can destroy a transfer case or a gearbox, and the repair will cost several times the recovery.

Ask about aluminium ramps if the car is low, and about wheel skates if it will not roll or is locked in park. An operator who does not know what a skate is cannot help you with a seized car.

Five: are you insured for my vehicle

Recovery operators carry insurance for vehicles in their custody, and the cover has limits.

For an ordinary car this rarely matters. For a high value, prestige, classic or modified vehicle, ask what the limit is and whether your car is within it. A firm that has never been asked before will hesitate, and that is your answer.

Six: what happens if it cannot be fixed roadside

You want a plan, not an improvisation.

The right answer is that they attempt a roadside fix where it is safe and appropriate, and where it is not, the vehicle is transported to a destination you choose, at the price already quoted. Not a second call out fee. Not a fresh negotiation once the car is on the deck.

Ask whether they will take it to your garage or only to theirs. A firm that only tows to its own workshop has an interest in the outcome that is not aligned with yours.

Seven: are you actually available twenty four hours

Plenty of firms advertise twenty four hours and operate an answering service outside office hours that takes a message.

The test is whether the person answering at midnight can commit to a time and a price. If they can only take your number for someone to ring back, that is not a twenty four hour service, it is a voicemail.

Eight: what do local reviews say

Not the count, the content.

Look for recent reviews from your area, mentioning specific places. Look for patterns rather than individual complaints: does the arrival time match what was promised, did the price hold, was the driver competent with the vehicle. One bad review among many is life. Five reviews all describing a price that changed on arrival is a business model.

Warning signs

Walk away from any of these:

• A refusal to quote until they have seen the vehicle
• A cash only demand, particularly at the roadside
• No company name on the truck or the paperwork
• Pressure to decide immediately, or a price that only holds if you agree now
• An unmarked vehicle where you did not call the company whose driver turns up
• Anyone who turned up without being called, which happens at accident scenes and is worth being very cautious about

That last one is worth stating plainly. If someone arrives at a crash you did not summon them to and offers to take the car away, do not hand over the keys. Ring a firm you chose.
