A lot of drivers assume that without breakdown cover they have no options, or that calling a private recovery company directly will be extortionate.

Neither is true. Private recovery is simply buying the service at the point you need it, and for most drivers the arithmetic works out in its favour.

What private recovery means

You ring a recovery company, agree a price, and they come. No membership, no policy number, no eligibility check, no queue position based on what tier you pay for.

The transaction is between you and the company that owns the truck. That has three practical consequences.

You choose the operator, rather than being allocated one. You choose the destination, rather than being taken to the nearest garage because that is what your policy covers. And you know the price before anything happens, rather than discovering afterwards which parts of the job fell outside your cover.

The arithmetic against a membership

Breakdown cover is insurance, and like all insurance it is priced so that the provider wins on average.

A mid range policy with recovery to a destination of your choice runs to a meaningful annual sum, every year, whether you break down or not. A local recovery in Glasgow is £60 call out plus £1.50 per mile, so a typical ten mile job is £75 before VAT.

If you break down roughly once every two or three years, which is typical for a reasonably maintained car, paying per incident usually costs less over a decade than a decade of premiums. If you run an older or higher mileage car and break down annually, cover may well be the better deal.

The other consideration is what the policy actually includes. Recovery to the nearest garage is not the same as recovery home. Where private tends to win outright

On a busy night. Membership queues lengthen exactly when demand spikes, which is the first frost, a storm, or a bank holiday. A private operator's queue is shorter because it is not national.

When you want a specific destination. Your own trusted garage rather than the nearest one that happens to be approved.

When the vehicle is unusual. Prestige, classic, modified, lowered, electric or non running vehicles need specific equipment, and booking direct lets you confirm what is coming.

When you already have cover but the wait is unacceptable. People do this constantly, and there is nothing wrong with it. If your club is quoting three hours and you have somewhere to be, ringing a local operator is a legitimate choice.

What a private job costs

Around Glasgow, local recovery is £60 call out plus £1.50 per mile, which covers roadside fixes such as a jump start, wheel change or fuel delivery as well as a tow.
