Recovery After a Road Traffic Accident: A Step-by-Step Guide
The steps you take in the minutes after an accident determine what happens with your insurance, your vehicle, and your safety.
Being involved in a road traffic accident is one of the most disorienting experiences you can have. Knowing what steps to take in the immediate aftermath protects your safety, your legal position, and your ability to make an insurance claim.
First, stop. It is a legal requirement to stop after any road traffic accident involving another vehicle, pedestrian, animal, or property. Leaving the scene is a serious criminal offence.
Check for injuries. Call 999 if anyone is injured, unconscious, or trapped. Do not move injured people unless there is an immediate danger (such as fire). Switch on your hazard lights and, if it's dark, keep your sidelights on.
Move vehicles off the road if it's safe to do so and the vehicles are driveable. If a vehicle is blocking a motorway carriageway and cannot be moved, call 999 immediately — a stationary blocked carriageway is a serious safety hazard.
Exchange details: name, address, vehicle registration, and insurance details. If the other driver refuses to provide details, note their registration and report it to Police Scotland within 24 hours.
Photograph the scene: damage to all vehicles, road position, skid marks, road signs, and any other relevant detail. Your camera roll is crucial evidence for your insurance claim.
Once the scene is safe, call SRL Recovery on 07776 356 556. We handle accident recovery across Glasgow and Central Scotland and can work directly with your insurance company. In many cases, if the accident isn't your fault, there's no upfront cost to you — we work with your insurer directly.
Do not drive a vehicle that may be unsafe after an accident. Damaged steering, brakes, or suspension could cause a further incident.
