Recovery in Bad Scottish Weather: Floods, Snow, and Ice
Scottish weather can strand vehicles in ways that standard recovery isn't prepared for. Here's how SRL Recovery handles adverse conditions.
Scotland's weather is among the most varied and challenging in the UK. From flash floods along the Clyde valley to black ice on the M74 and snowfall that can close A-roads overnight, Scottish drivers face conditions that can strand vehicles in unusual and difficult ways.
Flood recovery requires specialist knowledge. A car that has driven into standing water and stalled should never be started — water ingestion into the engine causes terminal hydrolocking damage. If your car has driven through a flood and stopped running, it needs to be winched out and transported without attempting to start it. SRL Recovery carries winch equipment rated for vehicle recovery from water.
Ice and snow create a different set of challenges. Vehicles that have slid off icy roads into verges or shallow ditches need careful extraction. A pull from the rear isn't always the answer — sometimes the geometry of the situation means a winch from a different angle prevents further damage. Our drivers assess each situation rather than applying a standard approach.
In severe weather, response times can be longer. Road closures, police diversion routes, and difficult driving conditions for the recovery vehicle itself all factor in. We always give honest ETAs and update you if conditions change our route.
One thing that does not change in adverse weather: we will come. SRL Recovery operates through all weather conditions. We won't cancel or tell you to wait until morning — if you've broken down in a Scottish winter, we'll get to you.
Preparation is always better than recovery. Keep your vehicle regularly serviced, check tyres and battery before winter, and carry a basic emergency kit. But if the worst happens, call 07776 356 556.
