Car Recovery Prices in Glasgow and Scotland: What It Actually Costs

The most common question we are asked, usually within ten seconds of picking up the phone, is what it is going to cost. It is a fair question and it deserves a straight answer rather than a request to wait and see.

This is how recovery pricing works in Scotland, what the numbers look like around Glasgow, and how to spot a quote that is going to change.

The five things that set the price

Every recovery quote in the country comes down to the same five variables.

Distance to you. The truck has to get there. A job two miles from the yard is cheaper than one forty miles out.

Distance from you. Where the car is going. A tow to a garage round the corner is a different job from a run to Carlisle.

What the job needs. A jump start is not a tow. A tow is not a winch out of a ditch. A winch out of a ditch is not a two truck heavy lift.

The vehicle. A hatchback, a long wheelbase Luton van and a seven and a half tonne truck need different equipment and different trucks.

The hour. Everything is cheaper between eight in the morning and eight at night than it is at three am on a bank holiday.

What the numbers look like

Around Glasgow, roughly:

• Local recovery, including roadside fixes such as a jump start, wheel change or fuel top up: £60 call out plus £1.50 per mile
• Motorway and live lane recovery on the M8, M73, M74, M77 and M80: £120 flat plus £1.50 per mile
• Winch fee, if the vehicle has to be pulled onto the truck: £40, only when needed
• Skate fee, if the vehicle will not roll: £40, only when needed
• Long distance and specialist work: the same per mile rate, quoted as one total on the call

All prices are before VAT, and there is no out of hours surcharge, no holiday surcharge, no fuel levy and no mileage rounding.

How to read a cheap quote

Cheap is not the same as good value, and the gap between them is usually disclosed at the roadside rather than on the phone.

Things that turn a cheap quote into an expensive one:

• A call out fee quoted separately from the recovery
• Mileage charged from the yard to you as well as you to the destination
• Waiting time billed by the quarter hour
• An out of hours or bank holiday multiplier on the whole job
• Access or difficulty surcharges applied on arrival
• Storage charged per day from the moment the car lands

None of these are illegal, and a firm that discloses them upfront is being honest. The problem is the firm that quotes one number, arrives, and then discovers four of them.

The question worth asking is not what does it cost. It is what is the total I will pay, including everything, for this job. A straight operator will answer that in one sentence.

Out of hours

There is no out of hours surcharge and no holiday surcharge. A call at three in the morning is charged at exactly the same rate as one at three in the afternoon.

What we do not do is price by how stuck you sound. A woman alone on the hard shoulder of the M8 at two in the morning gets the same rate as a fleet manager ringing at eleven on a Tuesday. Some operators do not work that way, and it is worth knowing that before you are the one on the hard shoulder.

When you might pay nothing

Three situations where the bill is not yours.

Non fault accident. If someone else caused the collision, their insurer is liable for reasonable recovery and storage costs. We deal with insurers directly and in most cases you pay nothing upfront. See our accident claim page.

Breakdown cover that includes recovery. Some motor policies and most standalone breakdown products cover it. Check whether yours includes recovery to a destination of your choice or only to the nearest garage, because that distinction costs money.

Insurance approved repair. Where a vehicle is going to an approved repairer, transport is often part of the claim.

How much is a local car recovery in Glasgow? Local recovery is £60 call out plus £1.50 per mile before VAT, so a ten mile job is £75. Motorway work is £120 flat plus £1.50 per mile. The exact total is confirmed before dispatch.

Is recovery more expensive at night? There is no out of hours surcharge. The rate does not move with the clock.

Do you charge for coming out if you cannot fix it? The quote covers the job you called about, including transport if a roadside fix is not possible. You are not billed twice for the same call out.

Can I claim recovery back on insurance? Often yes, particularly after a non fault accident, where the other driver's insurer normally covers it.
