Tyre Blowout Recovery: What to Do When Your Tyre Fails at Speed
A tyre blowout at motorway speed is one of the scariest moments in driving. Here's the correct response and what happens next.
A tyre blowout at speed is frightening and disorienting. The sudden noise, the pull to one side, and the change in vehicle handling can cause drivers to panic and make dangerous decisions. Knowing the correct response before it happens makes all the difference.
The most important rule: do not brake hard. When a front tyre blows at speed, hard braking can send the car spinning. Instead, maintain steady pressure on the accelerator for a second or two as you focus on steering straight. Grip the wheel firmly with both hands — the car will pull hard toward the blown tyre side.
Then gently ease off the accelerator and let the car decelerate gradually. Only apply gentle braking once the car has slowed significantly. Keep the wheel straight or with a slight correction into the pull. Signal and move to the hard shoulder or left lane when it is safe to do so.
Once safely stopped, switch on your hazard lights and follow standard motorway safety procedure: exit from the passenger side, move away from traffic, and call for recovery.
Do not attempt to change a tyre on the motorway hard shoulder. The danger from passing traffic is too high. Call SRL Recovery on 07776 356 556 — we'll come to you and either fit your spare at the roadside (off motorways where safe) or transport the vehicle.
A spare tyre is worth checking regularly. Many modern cars come with space-saver spares rated to only 50mph and 50 miles — if your spare is one of these, plan your route to your destination accordingly.
SRL Recovery covers all Glasgow motorway routes for tyre blowout recovery. Average response times on the M8 are 30–45 minutes.
