What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down on the M8

29 May 2026

The M8 is Scotland's busiest motorway. Here's the step-by-step guide to staying safe and getting recovered fast if you break down.

Breaking down on the M8 can be one of the most stressful driving experiences imaginable. The motorway carries over 100,000 vehicles a day between Glasgow and Edinburgh, so staying calm and acting quickly is essential for your safety.

The moment you feel something wrong — whether that's a tyre blowout, engine warning light, or loss of power — signal left immediately and move to the hard shoulder. Do not brake harshly. Ease off the accelerator and let the car roll safely to a stop as far left as possible, ideally away from a live lane merge point.

Once stopped, turn on your hazard lights. If it's dark or visibility is poor, keep your sidelights on too. Exit the vehicle from the left-hand (passenger) side only, never from the driver's door into live traffic. Get yourself and any passengers behind the barrier if one is present, or as far from the road as you safely can.

Do not attempt repairs on the motorway hard shoulder. This is one of the most dangerous places in the UK and even changing a tyre on the M8 hard shoulder puts you at serious risk from passing HGVs.

Call SRL Recovery on 07776 356 556. Tell us your exact location — the nearest motorway marker post number is the most helpful detail. These orange posts are spaced every 100 metres along the M8 and show your exact kilometre position. We'll dispatch immediately and give you an accurate ETA.

While you wait, stay behind the barrier. If you must remain in the car (e.g. due to disability or extreme weather), stay buckled in and keep well to the left.

SRL Recovery operates 24 hours a day and covers the full length of the M8 through Glasgow, including the M8/M73/M74 interchange at Baillieston and the Kingston Bridge section. We typically reach M8 breakdowns in central Glasgow within 30–45 minutes.
