Electric Vehicle Breakdown Recovery: What EV Owners Need to Know
EVs present unique challenges for recovery. From flat batteries to charge failures, here's what to expect and how we handle it.
Electric vehicles are rapidly becoming more common on Glasgow's roads, and their breakdown profile is different from petrol and diesel cars in some important ways. If you drive a Tesla, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot e-208, or any other EV, here's what to know about EV breakdown recovery.
The most common EV breakdown is charge anxiety — running low on battery — rather than a mechanical fault. If your battery is critically low and you can't reach a charger, you need recovery rather than a roadside fix. An EV cannot simply be given a "jump-start" like a conventional vehicle.
SRL Recovery handles flat-battery EV recoveries with flatbed transportation. The vehicle must never be towed in the conventional sense — towing an EV on its driven wheels can damage the electric motor and regenerative braking system, and it may violate the terms of your warranty. We always use a flatbed for EV recovery.
Many modern EVs have a "transport mode" that needs to be engaged before loading. Tesla, for example, requires this to prevent the brakes from locking. Our drivers are trained to check for transport mode and manufacturer guidance for common EV models.
For EVs that have suffered a mechanical breakdown rather than a battery issue — failed brakes, suspension, steering — the recovery process is largely the same as for any other vehicle. One thing to note: after a severe accident, EV batteries can be damaged and present a fire risk. If you've been in an accident with an EV, tell us and we'll take appropriate precautions.
SRL Recovery serves the full Glasgow area including all EV charging corridor routes. Call 07776 356 556 for EV recovery any time, day or night.
