The M74 (and its A74(M) continuation toward the M6) is the main southbound artery from Glasgow toward England. We cover the full length from junction 1 in Glasgow down to the M6 border. The M74 extension into Glasgow — opened in 2011 — runs through Rutherglen and Cambuslang where we operate daily.

Junction-by-junction coverage

J1–J4 (Glasgow Extension)

The newer M74 extension through Rutherglen, Cambuslang, and Polmadie. Heavy commuter traffic, lots of merging — common stretch for breakdowns and minor accidents. Average arrival: 20–30 minutes from our Motherwell base.

J4–J6 (Maryville to Hamilton)

Passes Bothwell, Uddingston, Hamilton services. Hamilton services is a frequent breakdown spot — cars that limp in but can't make it back out. Average arrival: 20–30 minutes.

J6–J9 (Hamilton to Larkhall)

Through Larkhall and approaching the M74 junction with the M73. Reasonable traffic flow but more isolated. Average arrival: 25–35 minutes.

J10–J13 (Lesmahagow to Abington)

Less developed area, fewer services. If you break down here you're a bit more isolated — get well clear of the carriageway. Average arrival: 35–50 minutes.

J14–J22 (Beattock and beyond)

The long climb at Beattock summit catches a lot of older cars and overloaded vans — overheating and transmission issues are common. The further south you are, the longer our arrival time. Beyond Beattock you're closer to a Cumbria-based service.

Known problem areas on the M74

  • warningHamilton services southbound — vehicles that limp in and won't restart
  • warningThe Beattock climb southbound — overheating in summer
  • warningJ5 (Raith) interchange — high-traffic merge point
  • warningM74 / M73 interchange — busy junction with frequent minor incidents

health_and_safetyIf you've just broken down — do this first

  1. 1. Sections of the M74 are smart motorway — no continuous hard shoulder
  2. 2. If on a smart section in trouble: aim for an emergency refuge area if visible
  3. 3. Live lane: do not exit the vehicle — call 999 immediately
  4. 4. Hazards on, seatbelts on, stay calm and wait for help

Pricing for M74 recovery

Motorway and live-lane recovery is charged at our standard motorway rate: £120 flat call-out + £1.50 per mile (plus VAT). This rate applies regardless of time of day — there are no out-of-hours or holiday surcharges.

Why the flat rate vs local? Motorway work requires extra safety equipment, coordination with Traffic Scotland or Police Scotland, and significantly higher risk to our staff. The flat rate also means you know exactly what you're paying before we set off — no "motorway surcharge" surprises.
