Is it the battery?
The classic signs are a slow, laboured crank, a rapid clicking when you turn the key, dashboard lights that dim or flicker, or nothing at all. Cold mornings, short journeys, a light left on overnight and a car that has sat for a couple of weeks are the usual causes.
If the engine cranks at normal speed but will not fire, the battery is probably fine and the problem is fuel or ignition. Tell us what it is doing when you call and we will tell you honestly whether a jump start is likely to work or whether you need the truck.
What happens after the jump
Once it is running we check the charging voltage before we leave. A healthy alternator charges the battery as you drive, and a twenty to thirty minute run gets most cars back to a usable charge. If the voltage says the alternator is not charging, or the battery will not hold, driving off just means breaking down again somewhere less convenient.
In that case we load the car and take it to your garage, a battery fitter or home, on the same visit. You pay the recovery mileage, not a second call-out.
Stop-start, hybrid and electric cars
Cars with stop-start use AGM or EFB batteries and have specific jump points under the bonnet or in the boot, which are not always on the battery itself. Hybrids and EVs have a small twelve volt battery that wakes the car up, and when that goes flat the whole car looks dead even though the main battery is charged. Jumping the twelve volt side is often the entire fix, and it is a job for someone who knows where the points are.
A jump start is charged at the £60 local call-out, plus £1.50 per mile. If the car will not hold charge and needs recovering, that continues on the same call-out at £1.50 per mile. No out-of-hours surcharge.

Do you need my keys?
Yes, and access to the bonnet or boot. If you cannot be there, tell us on the call and we can arrange collecting the keys first.
